The eradication of extreme poverty and hunger is the first goal listed on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). U.S. government agencies are joining forces to address global food insecurity. A recent GAO report indicates that "strategy is under way, but approach has several vulnerabilities."
To build this report, data has been collected from ten global food security conscious U.S. agencies, outreach was conducted in select countries with U.S. mission staff, host governments, NGOs and donors, and lastly key representatives attended the 2009 World Food Summit.
The report, in short, states that there is a broad array of outreach, but lack of "comprehensive funding data." The highlights of the report give a snapshot of the data (below).
